The Price of American Climate Virtue

Quote:
According to politicians like [California governor] Newsom and President Joe Biden, electric vehicles (EV) are “zero-emission” because they use lithium-ion batteries—consisting of lithium, cobalt, graphite, and other materials—instead of gas. Thus, starting in 2035, California will ban gas-powered vehicle sales, while several other states plan to follow suit, citing that as a goal and “critical milestone in our climate fight”.

In its 2022 report, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that in 2021, more than 70 percent of the global cobalt production came from the DRC and that southern Congo sits atop an estimated 3.5 million metric tons—almost half—of the world’s known supply.

It’s also one of the world’s poorest countries, and plagued by humanitarian crises, some of which are directly caused by mining.

In the DRC, an estimated 40,000 children are working in the mines under slave labor conditions—some as young as 6.

Yes, just as the evidence against the lie of “man made global warming” was always there for anyone to see, but was conveniently ignored, this evidence is, too.
On top of the fact that the “problem” it supposedly solves doesn’t exist, the damage to the environment created by the “solution” is worse than the supposed problem will ever be.
But they will continue to perpetuate the lie, for power and profit.

Electric vehicles are helping to drive a new wave of colonialism. Which may explain why the Left loves them so much.

I’m afraid that “colonialist”, like “racist”, has been reserved for white, free-market capitalists, not globalist multinational corporations promoting the green agenda of zero net emissions by 2050. Those children working in the mines are helping to keep the planet healthy. There is no despoliation, impoverishment or cruelty that cannot be greenwashed. I have yet to see any reports of activist ESG shareholders of electric car companies demand raising standards in cobalt mines.
