Despair and Hope

The world is afire more than it has ever seemed to be, and I despair.

Well…I will heed my own message that I give to unread people and say that it has often been on fire and perhaps much worse. But, this is my time to witness the disasters, and I despair. So much of the world is at the edge of the abyss.

However, I do not feel despair for my bit of the world and probably not for most of the country, which I think will continue in a reasonable form to hang on to “America” and recover from the current insanity that doesn’t really have a strong hold on most Americans…not enough to drag us over the edge.

I think my despair, in general, is for the loss of enlightened culture, the loss of all that had been gained in the late 20th and early 21st century toward harmony among the peoples of Western Civilizations, at least. The tolerance we developed for what is not evil, but the mere difference of our fellow human beings, and the blending of what we refer to as “races” that had kept us apart. The “Dream” of Martin Luther King seemed coming to fruition, and the understanding of what can be gained for and from a free people under decent governments that strove for the ideals of American government seemed to be unquestionable.

I despair for the refusal of intelligent people of strength to call evil out for what it is and to confront and vanquish it. I despair for the apparent desire of some to willfully destroy their own in order to gain power or to appear to be politically and culturally correct in order to keep their power and prestige. And I despair to think that the people who see clearly must become militant in order to stop this madness of the choice of national suicide by their leaders.

Yet, in my life there is no despair, as we continue the same as ever with very little difference to be seen or felt…well, excepting the last year of Covid shutdown, mask mandates, online schooling and extra sanitizing. Our little towns, small city and our large ocean resort have returned with amazing resilience. The crops are doing well and the price per bushel is great, unrealistic, but finally very good. Of course, the cost of farming has skyrocketed in response, and they will get their pound of flesh from the farmers, but still we will do well…barring a horrific hurricane season.

We have been healthy, the grands are growing strong and we are all very happy on the farm. Each of us feels that we are very fortunate. A couple of our local school board representatives are even keeping an eye on what is being taught and asking for input from parents on anything that smacks of CRT or 1619, so that is good. One board member, who was a Tea Party leader in the county, has reassured me that she brings the matter up every month and asks specifically what is being taught.

My despair for our global and even national future is not local. We are stubborn here and we recognize the creeping culture from the cities when we see it. I think that is how many parts of our nation are, and they are fighting back in elections, in court and in local government meetings. We also tend to have a great deal of the firearms and ammo…plus the people, who know how to use them effectively.

These stubborn, more rural parts of our country provide most of the warriors, and as our “woke-tortured” military members fulfill their tour of duty and quietly leave, they head for home.

No sane person wants to think along the lines of a militant response, and I am not sure that the Left has actually thought out the scenario that they seem to be pushing us toward. They need to wake up and realize what they are doing to The People.

The world is filled with the tragedy of people “trapped by history and geography” in their lives of despair, and I suppose that will never change, but briefly I thought it might. That Western Civilization is being drawn down to such a level is a new tragedy and one that is totally of human design. Thrusting it upon America may be their worst mistake and their undoing. That is my hope… and you know me and hope.

What you have written, Jeanne, actually gives hope. Pauses despair. If there are enough Americans who feel the way you do, then America will not only survive this horror it is going through, but flourish again, be great again. Thank you! Thank you!

What makes the loss - of what civilization had risen to up until the end of the 20th century - so much worse, is the fact that it was completely unnecessary. There was absolutely no reason for it at all, except that those people humanity can never seem to rid itself of - the power-mad and their useful idiots - just couldn’t let well enough alone. They just had to get their way, destroying everything good in the process, because it’s not “perfect”, like their so called Utopia supposedly will be.

And Liz, we have to count the fanatic religious zealots in that group of power-mad people that want to delete all those that disagree with their dogma and vision of the world. They represent the foolish tolerance of evil in our midst. The world has long been warned about the danger of Islamic zealots, and the warnings have been ignored by those who are tasked with protecting their nations.

Not only that, but the Islamic zealots have “allowed” themselves to be “used” by politically power-mad tyrants as they attempt to further their control. Who wins in the end is the one that still has their head attached.

Yes, we’re caught in the middle of attacks from barbarians out of a time warp, and futuristic sci-fi level weirdos who want to genetically engineer us into oblivion. All orchestrated by delusional megalomaniacs. Having fun yet?

If you made that scenario into a novel, everyone would say it was unrealistic!

I am so happy that there is a puking face smiley! Not classy, but apt for so many topics…

Some times I feel so alone in my views. But at least this site gives me comfort. Being a conservative these days is tough enough but an atheist as well…feeling quite an outlier.

So glad to see such intelligence and well written essays here. We are in a fight for Western Civilization and all that is decent.

Facebook. Which I have now quit. Life is so much better without it! It is evil, which even as an atheist I can recognize when I see it. Not supernatural but out of a self-defeating human desire of wanting power and control. I.e., see China.

LOL thanks, Mary, I was just wondering your path to here. Glad you are here. I still have a FB page for family mostly and my friend’s handbag products. I have so few friends that I can visit the page about 5 minutes at the most. I am hoping that others will follow.

Anything that would interest you in a category on this forum? I have been told we can pretty much make this forum what we want it to be. We could do pure atheist topics, family atheism topics, rearing atheist children, atheist spells and incantations…or recipes. Whatever…

I grew up Catholic but had my doubts even as a child. Especially because of the cruelty I was subjected to by nuns. Mine was mild but when I learned of corrupt history of the church, my questioning got more earnest. My oldest brother (a genius) helped me with this turnaround and demonstrated how one can lead a moral life with integrity without all that crap.
My problem is telling people I’m an atheist. They look at me as if I were a devil worshipper when that is exactly what I’m not. When I go to conservative meetings the first thing they do is pray. I am polite, just wish they were too!
I think that there are many of us, they just don’t want to rock the boat. I live in the Bible Belt!

Yes, it has to be a sort of “don’t ask, don’t tell” courtesy, to not talk about religion or lack of it… Having been one, my experience is that most Christians see Christianity as representing all that is good; they remain one or join a church because they want to be a good person, and see Christianity as the path to become good. They think God makes them good, when really it’s their own achievement, reached with the support of their fellow believers.
But the bottom line is, they’re basically good people, even tho they hate atheists!
