US and Iran: the Calm Before a Storm?

From the linked article:

U.S. defense officials are preparing for a longer-lasting military operation against Iran if President Donald Trump orders one.

Current planning envisions a campaign that could stretch for weeks. [Months? Years? - JB]

This would represent a significantly more serious level of engagement than previous confrontations between Washington and Tehran.

The preparations arrive amid ongoing diplomatic talks and heightened tensions in the region.

While military planners refine options for a prolonged campaign, U.S. envoys and Iranian representatives are meeting in Geneva for nuclear negotiations, with mediation by Oman. These talks aim to revive dialogue over Iran’s nuclear program, even as both sides stake out firm positions.

Comment:

Bad idea for the US to give Iran time to prepare for attack.

Will Iran make promises they have no intention of keeping? I think so.

Will President Trump be deceived by them? I hope not.

I can’t help but think that WWI was expected to last for only a few weeks. It turned into a years-long meat grinder. BTW, I’m currently reading Winston Churchill’s 5 volume series of books about WWI.

I think Trump is serious. He’ll do whatever it takes to bring Iran to its knees. Between Trump and Israel, I wouldn’t want to be Iran.

I am in awe of your undertaking to read all 5 volumes of Churchill on WW1!

It’s the right thing to do.

I say that, though I never read it. And now … well, I could try. I should try.

I hope you are right about Trump, Israel, and Iran!

I “wait to see what happens”.

I’m retired and have a lot of time to read. I have the Kindle app on my laptop and 4 different tablets. I keep 5 books going at once, almost all nonfiction. I’ve always had an insatiable thirst for knowledge.

I read Churchill’s 6 volume series about WWII years ago. He wrote 43 books in his lifetime. I expect to read about half of them. I’m also currently reading his 4 volume biography of the Duke of Marlborough, one of his ancestors. BTW, Churchill won the Nobel prize for literature in 1953.

That’s all excellent.

Thanks for telling us.

Yes, the great Victor won the prize for literature!

One book that’s been on my list for quite a while is Hitler’s Children. I just added it to my library. I’ll start on it when I finish the WWI series. You’ve done such a fine job of running this site, the least I could do is read your book.

You will find it easy to read. I wrote it as if it were a novel.

Make sure you get the later edition. It has information about the group after the deaths of the founders.

I got whichever edition is available on Kindle. Not sure which one that is.

I read the other day that both Kushner and Witkoff told President Trump that a deal with Iran about their nukes is going to be pretty much impossible.
They all must know who they are dealing with - liars who’s barbaric hatred for the “Satans” overrides any rational, sane consideration for them.
The only realistic conclusion for us, it seems to me, is to wipe them out and eliminate the threat they pose to both the US and Israel, not to mention their own citizens.

What’s the last sentence?

“For, after all, it is a question that can only trouble a free society.”
