This article is roughly right as far as it goes.

The great work on the subject is “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” by Edward Gibbon. This writer quibbles with Gibbon’s judgment about the dating of the Fall, but it’s a matter of definition. Rome maintained power over western Europe by spreading Catholic Christianity, with Popes instead of Emperors headquartered in “the Eternal City”.

Gibbon is a delight to read. He is a master of irony. The work is very long but worth the time needed to read it. The most famous chapters - about the spread of Christianity - are15 and 16.
