I share Jill’s unease at conservatives who appear uncritically to embrace Mr Putin, arguing that he is a Christian and a patriot.
He may be those things, but he also imprisons and kills his critics. This man is not a devotee of rule-of-law limited-state constitutional conservatism. (And I think roughly the same should be said about the recent love-affair of some conservtives with the people running Hungary. That’s another important discussion.)
However … we should seek common ground with Europeans, Russians … indeed with all people everywhere … who don’t want their countries absorbed into the Globalist nation-dissolving Giant Corporate/State which seeks to make its perverted view of human nature into law.
One of the things that really got the goat of the Left was Putin’s refusal to let homosexuals indoctrinate Russian children. More about that here: https:// Russia as the "Great Satan" in the Liberal Imagination
So we actually have a lot of possible points of agreement with Russian patriots. (One of them ought to be: stay out of Afghanistan … don’t try to civilize the uncivilizable! Well, we already both agree on that. Just generalize on that lesson! Stay out of other peoples’ countries!)
Okay, Putin fired the first shot. In my opinion, he fell into a kind of giant 6 January trap. Worst than a crime, it was a blunder.
That tragedy is now going to play out according to, as the Russians used to put it, ‘the relationship of forces’ … and this relationship is still unclear.
What we should all agree on is this: Russians will be better off in a state where ethnic Russians are the overwhelming majority. They ought to grant independence to their Muslim republics. (They did this with Chechnya, which was promptly seized by open gangsters. So some form of puppet government, as they have now, might be necessary, but the issue of citizenship should be clear: Russia for Russians.)
And we should be understanding of the Russian government’s concern for Russian minorities living in their former empire. So far, in the Baltics for example, they’ve been treated pretty well … probably more due to fear of Russian intervention than to any intrinsic good will among the former colonized. They’re not stupid.)
If, as some fear, the Russian government doesn’t really care a twig about NATO encirclement, or the treatment of Russians abroad, and is hell-bent on re-establishing the old Soviet empire … then we want to appeal to the masses of Russian patriots, who will be the cannon-fodder in this foolish attempt to reenact the past.
And the more we can restrain our own Deep State – with its 400 military bases abroad, a history of fairly frequent invasions of misbehaving countries the Deep State considered to be in its own sphere of influence … the more influence we will have among Russian and other patriots around the world.
