Nebraska Dems welcomed Secular Democrats of Nebraska in a video conference.
This is something I would like to see the GOP do - be more welcoming to smaller groups. I have reached out to individuals in county level GOP groups and have found them to be unwelcoming or just say “great” and that’s it.
I think this can be used as an example to pressure GOP leaders.
Granted, Sarah Levin, who is the primary director of Secular Democrats, has experience in D.C. and formerly worked for Secular Coalition for America, so she is more savvy with communicating with political groups.
I don’t want to discourage you from trying, but I think it is very unlikely that the Republican Party - even the tolerant Trumpian majority - could be persuaded to accept an atheist group as just a “smaller group” of right-wingers to the extent of welcoming them into a video conference. It may come to that if Trump or a Trumpian were to be elected to the presidency in 2024. But not now, is my guess.
Most Republicans are religious, or claim to be. In stark contrast, the Democrat Party calls itself secular.
Yes it really is an uphill climb with the GOP. Even young Republicans can be crass - either trying to maintain religious superiority or give an ultimatum to prioritize their pet values . One of our correspondents actually walked out on us because I did not support the rainbow flag being raised at the Wisconsin capital - I was not progressive enough!
I wish conservatives would get it together, then things will not become as ugly as what I predict.
