I truly do regret my jeremiads, but the chickens are coming home on Trump’s tariffs. Much sooner than I expected. Trump has been a colossus, an incredible and inspiring force for good across America. His demolishing the rancid racism of DEI and Wokism, his suppressing the climate hysteria, his staggeringly successful immigration and border achievement, too name only a few. My fear has always been his tariff policies, which concerned me from the very beginning. I was fearful that his grand achievements would be eventually eclipsed by an declining economy - due to his tariff policies. According to the leading lights of Sowell, Friedman, Hayek, and Hazlitt, tariffs never, never work. In the long run, they are always more harmful than good. This is my fear.
Well, I’m not going to argue with Sowell, Freidman, Hayek and Hazlett, but I think there are other factors at work here, too.
As the Mail report notes, some companies are replacing employees with AI, which is affecting the numbers.
Also, illegals that were taking American jobs are being deported. For example, Hyundai, which Biden had boasted was going to add thousands of jobs, just lost a large amount of workers who were illegals and got deported. Who knows how many will be replaced with American workers, or AI.
So things are in flux right now, due to the corrections Trump is making to the fraudulent mess created by the socialist takeover of the Left that’s been destroying the economy for decades.
Tarriffs may or may not be significant factor overall.
I think, in the long run - if Trump is able to continue his economic agenda - the economy will stabilize and improve.
Solidly argued, Liz. We’ll follow this closely. One of the maddening things to me is Trump’s explaining tariffs as if they are a fee paid by exporting countries. They are not. Tariffs are taxes paid by American consumers. Indeed, one could say they are the single biggest tax increase in American history. This puzzles and infuriates me.
Just saw an article (at the dailydoom.com), “THE DEEPER DIVE: The Labor Market Has Blown out BIGLY”. He agrees that the job numbers are declining, and mentions tarriffs as a factor.
One thing we can count on, I think, is that once Trump sees the effect that tarriffs are having , he’ll try to correct course in order to prevent disaster.
Damn, I hope you are right. His accomplishments on every other front are remarkable.
