I offer this as something different. Epstein is one of the finest essayists working today.
I particularly like this insightful and sympathetic appreciation of Maugham.

Yes, I too think that Joseph Epstein is a fine essayist, though I disagree with his judgment of some writers and their works. I very much like his short stories - all of them sad, if I remember rightly the ones I have read.
I think many of Maugham’s short stories are good. I don’t like the few novels of his that I’ve read. Seems to me Of Human Bondage starts rather well but becomes very irritating.
