Everyone has already moved on from this stupidity, yet the government remains fixated on it.
I’m sure it has nothing to do with authoritarianism.
This is the prison I live in now
I deeply sympathize, Cogito.
It can be no comfort to freedom-loving Canadians that authoritarianism is increasing everywhere.
No comfort indeed. I’m reminded that Toynbee declared that civilizations die from suicide not from murder.
There is a strong case to be made for that contention of Toynbee’s.
But is it true, for instance, of Constantinople?
Good question. I am no scholar, but my understanding is that the moral, cultural, and intellectual rot had already set in by the time of the Christian sack of 1204 - from which Constantinople never fully recovered.
It was ready for the final blow from Islam in 1453.
However, I haven’t read Toynbee’s interpretation of these events.
