Everyone has already moved on from this stupidity, yet the government remains fixated on it.
I’m sure it has nothing to do with authoritarianism.

It can be no comfort to freedom-loving Canadians that authoritarianism is increasing everywhere.

No comfort indeed. I’m reminded that Toynbee declared that civilizations die from suicide not from murder.

There is a strong case to be made for that contention of Toynbee’s.

But is it true, for instance, of Constantinople?

Good question. I am no scholar, but my understanding is that the moral, cultural, and intellectual rot had already set in by the time of the Christian sack of 1204 - from which Constantinople never fully recovered.
It was ready for the final blow from Islam in 1453.
However, I haven’t read Toynbee’s interpretation of these events.
