No serious political party in the US is, at the moment, going to campaign on restoring the draft. However, conservatives ought to be thinking hard about how we can strengthen our military, in particular by greatly expanding the number of people who serve in it, as as full time regulars, or as reservists of one sort or another.
One point: the purpose of the Second Amendment was that the people should be as well armed as the government. In the late 18th Century, this was easy: everyone could own a musket, and cannons were not difficult to forge. Today, things have changed. An AR15 is no match for an A10.
So, what should conservatives do, if they want to keep a potentially-tyranical government in check? Answer: be part of the military themselves. Every able-bodied conservative who has not done military service, and who is eligible, should enlist in the National Guard.
We also need to think about ways to make service in the Guard – or other forms of Reserve duty – less disruptive to people’s lives, and about ways to encourage Universal Military Training in the schools. It would be useful if someone, or a group, could study how other nations handle Reserve membership.

One thing you write I don’t agree with is the idea that military training should be compulsory in the schools. But perhaps you meant it should be voluntary?
Other nations? The only one I can think of which is defending civilization is Israel. Are there others?

Yes. I would make military training something someone could opt out of, on religious or
other principled grounds.
Obviously, given the anti-American attitudes among a large part of the ‘Education Establishment’ (especially in teacher training colleges), it would have to be introduced with a lot of caution and forethought. Perhaps on a voluntary basis at first. In fact, having it voluntary would mean the children of patriots got military training, and the children of Leftists didn’t, so maybe making it voluntary is a good idea on its own merits.
As for women in the military. The Israelis can teach us a lesson here. Everyone, of whatever sex/gender/orientation, should know how to handle a weapon, do serious first aid, have a knowledge of basic infantry tactics (fire-and-maneuver, overlapping fields of fire, camouflage, etc). Since warfare has played such a central role in human history, this could be justified just on grounds of understanding history alone. (For the same reason that every group of young persons studying history should have a go at trying to smelt copper, to see what a leap forward – and how difficult – this was.)
The real issue is mixed-sex combat units, which is an insane idea. Liberals believe that the way to strengthen ‘unit cohesion’ (a basic concept in the military) is to give, say, a Marine rifle platoon a homosexual lieutenant as platoon leader, aided by a transgender platoon sergeant.
Since the young men in the ranks might not be entirely enthusiastic about this, they will be compensated by having two or three nubile young women in each rifle squad, so that XYZ-phobia will be overwhelmed by the inevitable violent sexual jealousies that will grow up almost immediately. I can’t actually think of a more effective way to destroy our military.
As for who’s defending civilization. I’m not Jewish, but I know a bit about history. Of all the tribes of mankind, in proportion to their numbers, the Jews have made, by far, the greatest contributions in pulling our sorry species up from our savage origins, and if they can bring down the Iranian theocracy, it will rank up there along with the development of the theories of relativity, the discovery of the vaccine for polio, and many other intellectual breakthroughs they’ve pioneered.
As for the Middle East situation in general, I believe the great (Jewish) Marxist historian Isaac Deutscher [ Isaac Deutscher - Wikipedia ] put it best: the Jews jumped out of a burning building, and landed on the Palestinians. (For this to make sense, you need to know, as no doubt the readers of this forum do, that it was not only the German Nazis who murdered their Jewish fellow citizens, but also many of the other peoples of Europe whose countries the Nazis occupied. )
What Israel should do about the Palestinians is another question, but whatever the best strategy is, if the Israelis are not armed to the teeth and willing to use those arms, they’re doomed. But they understand this.

Yes, I’ve thought of it that way myself - that, in escaping the Nazis and returning to Israel, the Jews jumped out of the frying pan into the fire.
Of course Israel has a right to exist, but I really wouldn’t want to live there, surrounded by psychotic, genocidal barbarians.

If there were a (benevolent) God, It would persuade the Palestinians to do a land-for-peace deal, and get Gaza and a piece of what is now southern Israel, in return for evacuating the West Bank (which Israel needs for security reasons, if you look at the map). It would persuade the Israelis to apologize to the Palestinians for landing on them when they leaped from the burning building of Europe, compensate those who lost property, and help build a Palestinian state in the new territories.

As it is, we have to think long-term. Right now, the backward Arab monarchies have gotten tired of being defeated by the IDF, and are worried about Shia Iran. But this situation won’t last forever.
